Start of the UK financial year
It is odd that the financial year doesn’t start in January along with the calendar year. The reason it starts four months late is to do with an odd historical quirk connected to the move to the Gregorian Calendar in 1752. As the new fiscal year starts today – a lot of tax and benefit changes come into effect. Listed below are some of the more prominent changes that come into force.
UK tobacco display
Every retailer in the UK is banned from displaying tobacco in all outlets from today. Failure to comply could lead to an unlimited fine or a maximum of two years' imprisonment.
Personal allowance for income rise
Personal allowance for income tax is increased today from £10,000 to £10,600.
Savings income - rate reduced to 0%
The starting rate of savings income tax is reduced from 10% from today. Applies up to £5,000.
Income tax higher rate threshold - increased to £42,385
ISA allowance increased
Limit on savings in cash ISAs raised to £15,240.
Marriage Allowance - comes into effect
Tax break for married couples or those in civil partnerships is available from today. The allowance permits individuals with an annual income of less than £10,600 to transfer part of the Personal Allowance to a spouse or civil partner.
